Course Description:

LS 101-HYB is an hybrid course that will provide an introduction to the Spanish language with emphasis on the four language skills: reading, speaking, writing, and understanding Spanish. We will also gain an understanding of the culture of various Spanish-speaking countries.  Students enrolled in this class should expect to devote as much time to this course as they would an on-campus course. The independent nature of LS 101-HYB requires you to be self-motivated.

Core Learning Outcomes:

By the completion of the course students will:

1.    Students will be able to read, speak and understand elementary Spanish structures appropriate for the first semester.

2.    Students will understand the critical role of listening in order to respond and communicate in both situational and functional contexts. Students will practice and evaluate their listening comprehension and oral skills in the classroom and through the use of audio technology.

3.    Students will be encouraged to transfer language skills into new environments and different contexts. Students will also be able to use inductive and deductive reasoning.

4.    Students will understand historical, geographical, and economic features of the culture of Spain and Latin America.

5.    Students will understand the educational value of communicating in another language and realize that language acquisition is a lifelong learning process.

6.    Students will be able to understand and value cultural differences through the study of Spanish.

Attendance Policy:

Students in this class are expected to assume responsibility for attending class, their behavior during class sessions and their desire to learn. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.

The majority of students will find that class attendance and on-line participation are required in order to complete course work satisfactorily.  Students are expected to start and complete every class on time.  Students that attend regularly will be better prepared to complete testing and lab requirements.  The class attendance policy for this class is:

Class attendance and participation in Foreign language classes is required.  Failure to attend sessions does not excuse a student from completing assignments, examinations, or other requirements of the course on time.  Excused absences include illness (with doctor's note), emergencies, religious holidays, and official College functions.  Late assignments may not be accepted or may have a percentage (amount to be determined by the instructor) docked from the score.

Academic Honesty:

Each student is expected to perform his/her own academic work. If students work together, they are expected to each be working on separate computers and completing assignments on their own. Two students who work together but submit two copies of the same assignment (even if minor changes like names are made) are plagiarizing. Plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty are considered an extremely serious offense. The student is personally responsible for understanding the various forms of academic dishonesty as they are explained in the "Student Code of Conduct" in the Student Handbook.  Ignorance of any requirement for academic honesty will not constitute an excuse from disciplinary proceedings. Any form of cheating will be considered grounds for failure of the course.

Modification of Schedule:

The instructor reserves the right to adjust the assignments or schedule.  This may also change the date(s) of one or more of the exams.  Any affected assignment due dates may also be adjusted.  In the event the schedule is adjusted, the student will remain responsible for all the assignments listed in this syllabus.
