Course Description:

Understanding and Guiding the Young Child’s Behavior is designed for adults who are responsible for the care and development of young children from birth to age eight years of age, primarily in an early childhood setting. This course will focus on developmentally appropriate child guidance philosophies, methodologies of discipline, and guidelines for the responsible adult

 

Core Learning Outcomes: 

By the completion of the course students will:

  1. Compare and contrast developmentally appropriate child guidance techniques as related to specific types of behaviors.
  1. Summarize positive styles of care giving and positive discipline strategies.
  1.  Integrate elements of developmentally appropriate child guidance to aide children in the development of a healthy sense of self.
  1. Analyze child guidance case studies and apply appropriate strategies to them.
  1. Identify components of successful classrooms based on developmentally appropriate practices.

Attendance/Participation Policy:

Attendance & participation are expected and influence your grade. Students will receive 15 points for on campus sessions.  Students are expected to be on time & stay through the entire class time. Due to there only be four on campus sessions it is imperative students attend all four. The Instructor reserves the right to require makeup work for missed classes.

                  ONLY typed work will be accepted.

                     Evaluation Methods:

    1. Case Studies: Case studies are opportunities to reflect on concepts learned in the chapters. Students will  provide detailed answers using the information from the chapters and his/her ideas. 
    2. Article Review: Students will pick one article from Center for Emotional and Social Foundations for Early Learning under their what works briefs. Go to http://www.vanderbilt.edu/csefel/, go to resources and click on What works briefs. Or go straight to: http://www.vanderbilt.edu/csefel/resources/what_works.html

 

There are 22 briefs, students will chose one, summarize the articles main points and refer to the book supporting the discussion in the article. This review will be done in Discussion board 3.

    1. Discussion boards: Students will participate in three discussion boards, each will have directions for students to follow and topics to discuss.  Student grades will be based on their initial posting and their response to other students.

 

    1. Final: Students will complete the case studies in Chapter 13 using what they have learned in the course. The final will be posted in blackboard.
    2. Bibliotherapy: Students will pick a book that can help children in times of stress, emotions, changing families, etc. and will create a puppet to go with the book. (Cannot be store bought). Students will type up a response to the following: What the book is about, how this book can be used, why this book was picked, how the student would use it for young children and a written activity to accompany the book.
