Course Description:

Understanding and Guiding the Young Child’s Behavior is designed for adults who are responsible for the care and development of young children from birth to age eight years of age, primarily in an early childhood setting. This course will focus on developmentally appropriate child guidance philosophies, methodologies of discipline, and guidelines for the responsible adult

By the completion of the course students will:

  1. Compare and contrast developmentally appropriate child guidance techniques as related to specific types of behaviors.
  1. Summarize positive styles of care giving and positive discipline strategies.
  1.  Integrate elements of developmentally appropriate child guidance to aide children in the development of a healthy sense of self.
  1. Analyze child guidance case studies and apply appropriate strategies to them.
  1. Identify components of successful classrooms based on developmentally appropriate practices.

Attendance/Participation Policy:

Attendance & participation are expected and influence your grade. Students will receive 15 points for on campus sessions.  Students are expected to be on time & stay through the entire class time. There are only four on campus sessions it is imperative students attend all four. The Instructor reserves the right to require makeup work for missed classes. Students have to be in class to turn in work.

All written assignments must be on 8.5”x11” paper and feature one inch margins with readable font no larger than 12 pt unless otherwise noted.  Handwritten assignments will not be accepted.  All written assignments are expected to be free of spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammatical errors. Ideas should be expressed with clarity and papers should include proper language usage, sentence structure, and paragraph structure. Students who have difficulty with written assignments should contact the Writing Center for assistance.  Papers longer than one page must be stapled together.

 

 

Students will not text message during class. Students will not bring in lap tops to work on unless they have an accommodation plan through Services for students with disabilities.

 

Late Assignments:

  • Late written assignments will only be accepted via email sent from the student’s official FCC email account. Instructor has right to refuse late assignment.
  • Assignments are collected at the start of class and will be docked one letter grade for each calendar day they are late.

                  ONLY typed work will be accepted. All work due to Instructor or online (d.bd’s, etc) are due by

        midnight on due date.

 

                     Evaluation Methods:

    1. Case Studies: Case studies are opportunities to reflect on concepts learned in the chapters. Students will provide detailed answers using the information from the chapters and his/her ideas.  The case study questions are listed at the end of the chapter.

 

    1. Discussion boards: Students will participate in three discussion boards, each will have directions for students to follow and topics to discuss.  Student grades will be based on their initial posting and their response to other students. STUDENTS CANNOT POST EARLY ON DISCUSSION BOARDS.

 

    1. Final: Students will complete the case studies in Chapter 13 using what they have learned in the course. The final will be posted in blackboard.

 

    1. Muddiest Point- Students will post to each other on blackboard regarding their weekly readings. STUDENTS CANNOT POST EARLY.

 

    1. Application homework-Students demonstrate on homework assignments knowledge of guidance techniques. Homework is to be typed and stapled to handout.

 

    1. Observations- Students will observe the physical arrangement of a classroom in an under 5 classroom. Students will use the forms handed out in class and will not observe in any classroom their currently work in.
