Course Description:

 

Medical/Administrative Office Applications starts with basic level skills making it well suited for beginning students.  It covers the general flow of information in a medical office and the role that computers play in medical office administrative tasks.  Thomson Delmar Learning’s Medical Office Simulation Software is a feature-rich Windows-based program including functions that reflect today’s medical office environment such as variety in fee schedules, patient scheduling, and office hour organization.  Included are simulations for students to practice and understand the software and the functions of the medical office.  Students will demonstrate additional office procedures including insurance claims and financial tasks. Students will be expected to expand their medical vocabulary and to demonstrate skill in using the office simulation programs.

 

Core Learning Outcomes:

 

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.  Perform the tasks that are accomplished on a regular basis in the medical office, including: scheduling appointments, gathering /recording patient information, recording diagnoses and procedures, billing patients, filing insurance claims, reviewing and recording payments, and balancing the accounts.

2.  The different types of medical insurance, including knowing the steps involved in processing claims and collecting payments.

3.  The daily and monthly reports required to balance the practice’s accounts receivable.

4.  To be familiar with using reference materials for medications, and medical terms.

5.  The common applications of computer systems in the medical office, including scheduling, accounting, electronic medical records, e-mail, and the Internet.

6.  To demonstrate editing of office forms and documents, including resumes.

7.  To demonstrate a command of how the computer is used to accomplish daily tasks.

 

 

 

 

 

 Instructional Methods:

The course is presented in a traditional computer lab classroom and online via the Internet.  Communication between students and the Instructor will be facilitated by e-mail and telephone.  Quizzes and tests will be objective assessments available online, as well as in class production assignments.  Online assessments will be password protected and will be taken via BlackBoard.  Textbook reading assignments are supplemented with CD-ROM exercises, worksheets, oral assignments, and supplemental handouts.

 

 How is this course organized:

 

The course is a hybrid course that combines class work with internet activities via Blackboard.  Communication between students and the Instructor will be facilitated by e-mail and telephone.  Quizzes and tests will be objective assessments available online, as well as, classroom internet activities, PowerPoint’s, and classroom participation assignments.  The assessments will be password protected and located on Blackboard.  Textbook reading assignments are supplemented with CD-ROM exercises, worksheets, and supplemental handouts posted on the class Blackboard website. This course is designed within the 15-week topical outline.  This is not a self-pace course.  Students should follow the topical outline and updates on Blackboard.   however please keep on track with the syllabus and topical outline.

 Participation Policy:

 

(1)   Participation in Medical Office/Administrative Procedures is measured by your presence in the classroom and online Blackboard activity. 

(2)   To demonstrate your participation in this class you must attend class and log-on to Blackboard at least once a week to complete the weekly assignments, quizzes, discussion board topics, and other activities outline in the topical outline and current weeks folder, or contact me via email to discuss on why you were unable to complete the week’s assignments or attend class.  

(3)   To maintain the schedule of the syllabus and topical outline complete the all the assigned work for that week.

(4)   Any assignment received after the due date will be evaluated in the following manner:

·        1-2 days* late- reduction of one letter grade

·        3-5 days* late – reduction of two letter grades

·        > 5 days* - student receives no credit for assignment

·        (*days will include weekends and holidays)

(5)    No instructor will accept an entire semester's worth of assignments the last week of class.

(6)   To maintain and achieve an A in this course, you are expected to attend all classes and participate in all activities, quizzes, assessments, and tests including the final exam, out lined in the topical outline of this course.

(7)   Three unexcused absences will be a failure in the class for this 15 week course.

Excused absences are: Medical issue, death in family, birth of a baby (cohabitant), hospitalization, religious holiday, emergency

(8)   You must contact the instructor as soon as possible if you will be unable to attend class via email, text, etc.

(9)    Being late to class four times equals one unexcused absence for a 15 week session.

(10)                    In case of serious illness, emergency, religious holidays, or participation in official college functions, you are still responsible for completing the requirements of the course outlined in the topical outline and updated in the Blackboard site.

(11)                    What should you do if you are unable to participate? If you are unable to participate due to prolonged serious illness or personal emergency, you are expected to contact your faculty member as soon as possible. If you are unable to participate due to technical problems, you are expected to notify the appropriate technical support personnel and then, notify your faculty member. Failure to notify your faculty member will be considered a missed deadline. All assigned work must be completed regardless of the reason for nonparticipation.

Time Commitment for Academic Success

 

At Frederick Community College, in all credit courses, students are expected to invest a minimum of two hours completing out-of-class course work for every hour of in-class instructional time. For example, in a 3-credit course, students experience at least 37.5 hours of instructional time and should invest a minimum of 75 hours in out-of-class time preparing for the course and completing assignments.
