Course Description:

Medical/Administrative Office Applications starts with basic level skills making it well suited for beginning students.  It covers the general flow of information in a medical office and the role that computers play in medical office administrative tasks.  Thomson Delmar Learning’s Medical Office Simulation Software is a feature-rich Windows-based program including functions that reflect today’s medical office environment such as variety in fee schedules, patient scheduling, and office hour organization.  Included are simulations for students to practice and understand the software and the functions of the medical office.  Students will be expected to expand their medical vocabulary and to demonstrate skill in using the office simulation programs.

Core Learning Outcomes:

By the completion of the course students will learn:

1.  The tasks that are performed on a regular basis in the medical office, including: scheduling appointments, gathering /recording patient information, recording diagnoses and procedures, billing patients, filing insurance claims, reviewing and recording payments, and balancing the accounts.

2.  The different types of medical insurance, including knowing the steps involved in processing claims and collecting payments.

3.  The daily and monthly reports required to balance the practice’s accounts receivable.

4.  To be familiar with using reference materials for medications, and medical terms.

5.  The common applications of computer systems in the medical office, including scheduling, accounting, electronic medical records, e-mail, and the Internet.

6.  To demonstrate a command of how the computer is used to accomplish daily tasks.

Instructional Methods:

The course is presented in a traditional computer lab classroom and online via the Internet.  Communication between students and the Instructor will be facilitated by e-mail and telephone.  Quizzes and tests will be objective assessments available online, as well as in class production assignments.  Online assessments will be password protected and will be taken via BlackBoard.  Textbook reading assignments are supplemented with CD-ROM exercises, worksheets, oral assignments, and supplemental handouts.

Attendance Policy:

Students are expected to attend all classes.  One unexcused absence will not have a negative impact on your grade, but uncompleted assignments and assessments will.  Excused absences will be treated as addressed in your FCC student handbook.  Each class session covers at least one text/workbook chapter.  All quizzes, tests, and class production assignments must be completed to achieve excellence in this course.  Students must have completed all assignments on or before December 13, 2008.

Introductory Information on Getting Started:

1.  Print out a copy of the course syllabus and the schedule of assignments.  It is always wise to keep a copy of this information handy “just in case” you are away from your class computer and need to access this information.

2.  Your in-class work computer work will begin with Chapter One and continue in sequential order.  The material in the book begins with the basics and builds upon itself.  Skipping around from one section to another generally does not benefit the learner.  It may seriously impede your academic progress.

3.  Take an hour or so to practice navigating the online BlackBoard site, and use the handbook online for specific help in using the website.

4.  Record  your assigned BlackBoard username and password in a safe place.  Both entries are necessary to login to the course site and to take quizzes and tests online.

5.  Bookmark the login page so that you can quickly enter and exit the “classroom” at your convenience.

6.  The FCC Computer Lab provides you with out-of-class access to the Application Software Program in case you need additional time to complete production assignments.

Notes:

Quizzes and Tests should only be taken after the text/workbook review sheets have been completed and after the class for that chapter has been held.  Passwords will be obtained from your course instructor.  Once you have the password, you are able to decide which day of the week you wish to take the quiz assessments online.

All tests will be administered on campus.  The final examination will be administered at the FCC testing Center.

The instructor reserves the right to alter the syllabus.
