 How is this course organized:

Please note that this is NOT a self directed course. Each week is organized with readings, assignments, project progress and discussion topic. Deadlines are at the end of each week unless otherwise specified.

  1. Course Learning Outcomes (in the syllabus) are the major purposes of this course and what you are expected to be able to do by the end of the course.
  2. Weekly Focus (in the assignments area, in each weekly folder) breaks the Course Learning Outcomes down for each week. This is a preview of what you will learn in the chapters, videos, and discussion for the week. Read the Weekly Focus carefully so you will know what to concentrate on.
  3. Weekly Media - These media items have been carefully selected to introduce and further explore certain health topics.
  4. Weekly Readings are from Focus on Health, 10th edition. Please make sure you have the 10th edition as many chapters and pages have changed from older editions. This textbook is well done and provides you with a great foundation for these topics. ** Study hint- read the chapters before the week begins or within the first 2 days in order to appropriately participate in the discussion board and complete assignments.
  5. The Additional Exploration section is not optional. The information provide here is for you to read and review (and hopefully print and keep). Some of this information will be on the rest, so I suggest reading certain things.
  6. Weekly Writing Assignments reinforce materials in the textbook and it gives you opportunities for discovery. It also provides a practical side to your personal health education experience.
  7. Online Weekly Discussion Boards allows you to demonstrate your critical thinking based on knowledge gained from videos, research, lecture notes, chapters, your own experience, and others’ experience. Your participation counts towards your final grade and the discussion board is a big part of your final grade.
  8. Weekly Project Activities prepare you for the Semester Project which demonstrates your critical thinking based on knowledge from the chapters, videos, research and hands-on experiences (the most important kind). The project counts towards your final grade and in a seven week course it is important that you dedicate time to the project every week.

Text(s) and Course Materials:

Focus on Health, Tenth Edition, Dale B. Hahn, Wayne A. Payne, Ellen B. Lucas

Progress Report:

One of the greatest features about an online class is that you have full access to your grades and can monitor your progress consistently. By the end of the 3rd week of the semester (after exam 1), you will have an opportunity to evaluate your progress in this course. If necessary, you and I will decide whether you need to make adjustments (additional study, tutoring, face to face conference with instructor) to assure your success in this course.

Student Services

A variety of services are available to assist students in succeeding at FCC. Students can learn more about these services by visiting the Student Services web page: http://www.frederick.edu/student_services/index.aspx.

Students with disabilities who are in need of accommodations or who have questions related to disabilities services should contact the Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) office at 301-846-2408. Students can learn more about these services by visiting the Services for Students with Disabilities web page: http://www.frederick.edu/student_services/disability.aspx.

 Participation Policy:

1.     To maintain the highest quality of academic work and facilitate interaction among participants, this HE 204 class participation policy expects the student to participate fully in all course activities.

2.     I am able to track when you have accessed the site and will follow participation in the weekly discussion board. Attendance for HE 204 online includes accessing and completing weekly assignments and actively participating in weekly discussions on time. You are also expected to check e-mail (FCC account) daily in a 7 week course and check the site at least every other day for announcements and updates.

3.     I do NOT accept late work. Deadlines are clearly marked under each Weekly Assignment folder and ample time is provided to complete assignments.

4.     In case of a serious illness, emergency, religious holiday, or participation in official college functions, students should remain responsible for completing the requirements of the course and must discuss with the instructor BEFORE the deadline, not after the fact.

 Email Policy:

With the exception of MOL students, all FCC students will receive and are expected to use their FCC email address for correspondence with faculty and staff at the college. Students can establish and access their FCC email accounts at https://myfcc.frederick.edu. Email is an instructional tool essential to student-instructor and student-student communication. In the Blackboard environment by default, your email address is available to all students in this course.

However, students are permitted to use email addresses of other students in this course only for the purpose and the duration of this course.

The instructor can be expected to respond to regular student email inquiries (grades, posted assignments, and tests excluded) within the time frame of 24 to 48 hours.

Academic Integrity:

As a student, it is your job to practice academic honesty at ALL times.  Make sure that all sources, particularly Internet sources, get proper credit for quotations, paraphrases, and ideas.
