 How is this course organized:

This is considered a hybrid course.  Students will attend class on campus once a week where they will participate in an interactive lecture/demonstration.  Attendance is a required component of the course.  This is not a self-paced or independent study course.  It is also not a totally online class.  All assignments, weekly quizzes and additional participation will continue through the online portion of the class

 Instructional Methods:

Lecture and hands-on demonstration and software online activities.

Text(s) for Course:

Evaluation Methods:

Final Grade Scale

40% of grade = Exams

A = 90% - Above**

B = 80% - 89%

C = 70% - 79%

D = 60% - 69%

F = Below 59%

If the graded performance for online assignments differs significantly from the grade average for proctored assignments, the instructor reserves the right to administer additional tests.

**NOTE: It will be necessary to hand in every assignment/quiz/exam to receive an “A” grade in this course.

Participation Policy:

Participation is required for each weekly on-campus class.  There will be a graded activity during each on campus session.  If you are absent from class, assignments are still required to be submitted by the due date.  Students are expected to come to class on time and remain in class during the scheduled time frame. Late arrivals and early dismissals disrupt the class, which already only meets for a short timeframe.

Students are required to use the discussion board to post questions and tips and provide responses to other students and instructor questions.   Students who encounter problems with their assignments or text are encouraged to post their question on the discussion board first.  Classmates are then requested to try and offer solutions to the question.  Any extra credit will come from the student’s participation in the discussion board

 Privacy and Communication in this course:

Email is an instructional tool essential to student-instructor and student-student communication. In the Blackboard environment by default, your email address is available to all students in this course.  However, students are permitted to use email addresses of other students in this course only for the purpose and the duration of this course. Students who are concerned about the privacy of their personal email address are reminded of commercially available products that allow them to create unique email addresses specifically for the purpose and duration of this course.

The instructor can be expected to respond to regular student email inquiries (grades, posted assignments, and tests excluded) within the time frame of 48 hours.

Academic Honesty:

Work in this course is subject to the provisions of the FCC Code of Academic Honesty. Plagiarism in any form will not be tolerated. As a student, it is your job to practice academic honesty at ALL times.  Make sure that all sources, particularly Internet sources, get proper credit for quotations, paraphrases, and ideas.

Software Piracy:

Software that is copyrighted is intended for use in its original form.  Duplicate copies can be produced only if written the manufacturer grants permission.  The U.S. law states that noncompliance may result in civil damages not exceeding $50,000 and criminal penalties of up to one (1) year and/or a $10,000 fine.  Minors are not exempt from copyright law.

Progress Report:

Grades will be posted in the grade book section of the blackboard site weekly.  Students can monitor their progress/grades throughout the semester via the Blackboard grade book.

At the end of the sixth week, students will be notified by the instructor if they have a grade lower than a C.  You will have an opportunity to evaluate your progress in this course and decide if you need to make any adjustments (additional study, tutoring, conference with instructor) to assure your success in this course.

Notes:

1.    Computer Requirements:

a.    Students must have an email address AND students must change their email address in Blackboard if the email address changes during the semester

b.    Students should have access to Access 2010 (at home/work or plan to use the FCC computer lab).  Assignments can be completed using an earlier version of Access (2003, 2007); however, there are differences and students should be prepared to learn on their own how to complete their assignments using the different version as the textbook and classroom instruction focuses only on Access 2010. Not completing all elements of an assignment because you are using an earlier version of Access is not acceptable.

2.    Data files:  Students will need a flash drive OR three blank diskettes.  Please bring the flash drive or diskettes to the each class.  Data files will be downloaded to your disks each week to correspond with the assigned text tutorial.  We will be using the data files to demonstrate and practice the lesson during each class.  This same disk will contain the files needed for your homework assignments. **If you are absent from class or for some reason your disk is damaged, it is your responsibility to download the data files from the computer lab or the textbook website.

a.    If your home computer does not have a disk drive, you are responsible for downloading the files directly from the internet textbook site to your home computer hard drive. You will then need to complete the assignments using folders/files on your hard drive or choose to save to a memory stick or CD-ROM. The college does not have a CD-ROM burner on the classroom computers; therefore you cannot save the data files to a CD-ROM in class.  You can bring a memory stick to save files for your home computer.  ****You are still REQUIRED to bring the disks with you to class to participate in the classroom lecture exercises!

b.    To download data files to your home/work computer’s hard drive, go to the textbook website:  www.course.com   Note:  Some students like to have a second copy of the data files from class or do not have a disk drive on their home computer to access the classroom files.

·      Choose  Student Downloads and enter the ISBN on the back of your text

·      Follow instructions on the inside back cover of your text or follow the detailed instructions on the blackboard site.

3.    Study Guides:   “Quick Check” Questions in the text are not assigned; however, you are encouraged to use the questions as a study guide/practice for the theory quizzes.

4.    Due Dates:  All graded work must be submitted at the beginning of each class.  It is the student’s responsibility to gather the assignments and due dates from the blackboard site and adhere to the schedule.  Typically, late assignments will NOT be accepted unless accompanied with a signed note.  Tutorial assignments will NOT be accepted after the exam in which that tutorial has been completed.  ABSOLTELY NO ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER MAY 18, 2012! Computer problems or failure to connect to the internet to access blackboard/email will not excuse the student from completing the course requirements by the due dates.  The computer lab is available during posted hours.

5.    Assignments:  All assignments will be saved as directed in the book with one modification.  Please include your last name as the first part of the file name, e.g. LastName_NameOfAssignment.mdb

6.    Quizzes:  Online theory quizzes must be taken each week BEFORE the beginning of the next class.  Quizzes are only available on the blackboard site during the assigned timeframe.  Quizzes will expire and will no longer be accessible after the due date.

7.    Please notify the instructor immediately of any change in e-mail address, phone number(s), residence address, or any other means of contact.  You must update your email address in Blackboard if your email address changes during the semester

8.    If you have any questions or concerns, please notify the instructor by e-mail.
